Climate change, waste, pollution, extinction, deforestation and the increasing threat of extreme weather events. The state of the world is overwhelming. How are we ever going to get ourselves out of this mess? We should all be living underground in completely sustainable structures and doing little else besides growing food and planting trees.
But, since that’s not feasible right now, we believe that purchasing carbon credits (or carbon offsets) is one of the smartest and easiest solutions available today.
What are carbon credits?
A carbon credit is a unit of greenhouse emissions reduced or removed from the atmosphere. Purchasing one carbon credit is equal to offsetting one tonne of greenhouse gas emissions.
Carbon credits are created by certified emissions reductions projects established around the globe. Projects generally involve reforestation, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy or a mix of all three.
For example, the Rimba Raya Biodiversity reserve in Borneo (pitcured above and below) is the world’s largest privately-funded Orangutan sanctuary and also the biggest REDD+ listed carbon reduction project, protecting nearly 65,000 hectares of peat swamp forest and avoiding more than 130 million tonnes of carbon emissions to date.
Why purchase carbon credits?
It is estimated that the average Australian has a carbon footprint of over 15 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The bad news is, that’s well over the recommended maximum of 2 tonnes per person. And, while it’s important to reduce your energy, waste and water use, there’s only so much individuals can do to reduce their carbon footprint in practical measures.
The good news is, the planet doesn’t care where greenhouse gas emissions are offset. Just how much is offset overall. Carbon credits are a smart way to offset emissions and help cool down the planet. You can support clean energy, biodiversity and reforestation projects while offsetting your emissions by purchasing verified carbon credits.
A note about carbon credits available through Low Carbon Living
All our carbon offsets are NCOS-approved and either Verified Carbon Standard or Gold Standard, sourced from authorised Australian carbon credit suppliers, Pangolin Associates.
